03Biography

The Kavan the Kid story

Psychology, then the camera

Kavan Cardoza started out studying psychology at Boise State University, then left because film and photography let him say more[38]. He went to film school in Florida, which he now calls a waste of time next to what he learned on the job, and moved to Los Angeles to direct music videos for independent and hip-hop artists[32][1]. Bypass Hollywood reports that the nickname, Kavan the Kid, dates from childhood[33].

Money was always short, so he did every job himself. He lit, shot and edited, and built sets and costumes in a house in South Central, where he says he would "literally build set pieces from scratch"[32]. He describes about fifteen years of music videos and then commercials, including work for Island and Atlantic Records, and a reputation as the director who could make a $20,000 or $30,000 budget look three or four times bigger[1][32]. One public credit from those years is Flood Society's God's Gift in 2017, which names him as director[42].

I was the set designer, the set builder, I was the cinematographer, the director of photography, the editor.

Kavan the Kid[1]

Darkness, photographed

Alongside the videos he made surreal self-portrait photography. In 2014 Scene360 introduced him as a Los Angeles music video director and photographer, and over the next five years his pictures were featured by Juxtapoz, Fubiz, Who Killed Bambi?, Beautiful/Decay and others[38][40]. In a 2019 interview he called 2018 the lowest point of his life and said that making art had saved it, on more than one occasion[39].

Those pictures became a book, Stay Inside and Don't Let the Dreams Out, which he dates to March 2020; Scene360 had reported a planned date of February 2020[1][39]. It is full of masks and bandaged faces, and the look runs straight into his later work: in 2024 he turned the book into a surreal short film, and its bandaged faces prefigure the Collector[21][1]. In 2021 he also released a song of his own, Alright, and directed its CGI-heavy video[41].

From blobs to Batman

His first AI experiments were early Midjourney images, which he remembers as blobs where he could "kind of see Deadpool"[32]. By 2024 he was making short concept trailers for franchises he loved, Power Rangers, Spawn, G.I. Joe and Street Fighter among them, while deliberately keeping his own ideas back until the tools could carry them[22][1].

On 4 December 2024 he released The Batman: A Face of Clay, a ten-minute AI fan film made with Mike J Mitch and Sav in about three weeks, using Midjourney, Kling, MiniMax, Runway Act-One, ElevenLabs and Topaz[23][24]. It became his most watched video at the time. A few days later Warner Bros had it removed from YouTube and his other channels, followed by a cease and desist letter; Kavan puts it at "four days or something like that", Delirio at five[1][25]. He never reposted it. The takedown, he says, was a big factor in what came next[1].

On 1 January 2025 he launched the AI studio Phantom X with Mike J Mitch and Sav[2]. They took no outside investment, because they wanted to own the company and steer it themselves[25]. Six weeks later came Star Wars: The Ghost's Apprentice, an eleven-minute fan film about a young Jedi a century after the Skywalker saga, which Forbes headlined as the best Star Wars movie in years[19][26].

Echo Hunter

His first original film, Echo Hunter, came out on 28 May 2025: a dystopian thriller presented by Arcana Labs and produced by Phantom X, billed as "a SAG-AFTRA approved AI film", with Breckin Meyer, Taylor John Smith and Danielle Bisutti in the cast[16][27][28]. Its clone hunters never take off their masks. He wrote it that way because the tools of the day, Runway Act-One included, could not yet handle faces and lip-sync[1].

AI video had no sound then, so he built every effect by hand from his own library and Artlist; the film took about two months[1]. A prequel, Echo Hunter: A Memory Too Far, followed in September 2025, presented by Kling AI and starring King Bach, and Kling showcased it at MIPCOM in Cannes that October[17][29]. In between he released a trailer for Untold: The Immortal Blades Saga, a script AVCesar reports he had been developing for more than eight years[49][50].

I believe sound is 90% of a film.

Kavan the Kid[1]

Stripping legends to the bones

The Chronicles of Bone began with a question: what if he put the public domain characters everyone knows into one world, stripped them down to the bare basics, and rebuilt them in his own story[1]? King Arthur, Robin Hood, Peter Pan, Tinker Bell, Captain Hook, Captain Nemo and a Frankenstein-like figure called the Collector now share a world ruled for five centuries by the Mordane Empire, a vampire dynasty[1][30]. He spent six or seven months writing, and all five seasons were finished before production began[1].

He launched it on Instagram's terms. Six prologues, the first only 90 seconds long, each introduced one character so viewers would care before the season started[2]. Prologue One arrived on 4 November 2025, and AI LIVE screened it on the weekly show two days later, where its sound design stood out[7][48]. Prologue Three, The Collector, on 30 December 2025, broke out: it now has 5.7 million views[6].

A Magnific Original

In February 2026 Freepik, the Malaga company now called Magnific, bought the remaining prologues and the whole of Season One, its first original series made entirely with AI[30][31]. Kavan keeps 100% of the IP and creative control; the plan is five seasons and more than 40 main characters[31]. Prologue Four was the first episode billed as a Freepik Original, and from Chapter One in May 2026 every episode carries the Magnific Original label[9][11].

The audience kept growing. Prologue Five, Captain Hook's story, is his most watched episode at 7.75 million views, and the twelve episodes released so far have passed 45 million between them[5][3]. The Los Angeles Times featured him that July among the filmmakers taking ByteDance's Seedance into Hollywood, and The Guardian visited the spare bedroom in Playa Vista where he makes the show, describing a lucrative deal with Magnific[34][35].

Sixteen days, 5am to 11pm

He makes each chapter almost alone, in 16 to 20 days of 5am to 11pm work[2]. Every character starts as a real costume: for the Collector he bought bandages at CVS, wrapped his own face, added a black hat, a yellow raincoat and black gloves, then iterated the photo in Nano Banana[1][2]. Starting from a human-made object also documents authorship: his scripts, world book and character designs are registered for copyright, and the name is trademarked[2].

Every shot in Seedance 2.5 is loaded with up to 50 references, and his ratio of generations to usable shots has fallen from about 90 to 1 on Seedance 2.0 to between 30 and 20 to 1[2]. Because 2.5 adds music to action shots whatever he prompts, he splits clips into dialogue, effects and music in Moises AI, or cleans them frequency by frequency in RipX DAW[2]. Music comes from Suno, prompted, as he puts it, like a director's cue sheet[1][37]. An episode costs tens of thousands of dollars in credits; his low-end estimate for shooting the same thing live action is $10 million or more[2].

I never would have been able to make this story without it, because no studio would have taken a chance on it.

Kavan the Kid[2]

What comes next

Season One runs eight chapters, released on the first Tuesday of each month, with the finale due in December 2026[1][2]. Phantom X now runs five original shows from Kavan, Mike J Mitch, Sav, Aze Alter and Rafa, and joined Fairground Entertainment's AI-only FAST channel in July 2026[2][44]. He directed Last Recall for Wonder Studios' Beyond the Loop anthology, spoke at Magnific's Upscale conference in San Francisco and at LA Tech Week, and was due at Upscale in Spain in November 2026[18][45][46][2].

Asked on AI LIVE whether he is a filmmaker or an AI filmmaker, he did not hesitate: "I just consider myself a filmmaker."[2]

06The world he built

Inside The Chronicles of Bone

King Arthur, Robin Hood, Peter Pan, Captain Hook and Captain Nemo, stripped to the bones and rebuilt in one world at war with a vampire empire[1]. Then the Collector's arsenal from Chapter Six, frame by frame.

The backstory

Five hundred years of vampire rule, in six lines

Everything you need before Chapter Six. Scroll, and each line lights up.

  1. 01Five centuries

The Mordane Empire, a dynasty of vampires, has ruled the Realms of Man for more than five hundred years[2][30].

  2. 02The rules

A Mordane heals from any ordinary wound. Only beheading or fire can kill one, and only Excalibur or Tink's fairy magic leaves a wound that never heals[2].

  3. 03The New Dawn

When Vlad Mordane fell into a mysterious slumber, his son Varek seized the throne, proclaimed the New Dawn and overthrew the first vampire order, the Dawn Spawn[8][4].

  4. 04Twenty years ago

Neverland fell. Peter Pan died, Captain Hook made a pact with the Mordanes, and Tink spent ten years as Lorsett Mordane's slave[11][5][2].

  5. 05The legends rise

Arthur pulled Excalibur and took the Southern Realm, Robin Hood began freeing whole cities, and Captain Nemo rose from the deep[10][9][5].

  6. 06Chapter Six

The Collector, who has searched five centuries to bring his wife back, rides north to Vaylos, where Varek has kept the last Dawn Spawn chained for fifteen years[6][4].

The lore

One world. Every legend. A vampire empire.

When Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein was announced, Kavan decided he didn't want another faithful retelling of a story everyone knows[1]. So he took the public domain characters we have all seen too many times, stripped each of them down to the bones, and put them in one made-up world[1].

The rules are fixed, and he never breaks them. The whole show is written, five seasons of it, and he admits he now lives in that world more than the real one[1][2].

The Mordane Empire
Pure-born vampires raised like Spartans and trained for battle from childhood. Their bite turns the victim and binds them for good[2].
The realms
The Southern, Middle and Northern Realms of Man, and the Dead Realm. Loxelan, Blackmere, Camelot, Horns Canyon, Dead Man's Bay, the City of Ash and Vaylos lie within them[1][2][4].
Excalibur
Made by Vivian, the Lady of the Lake. It treats a vampire like a regular person, so its wounds do not heal[1][2].
Fairy dust
The source of Tink's burning attacks. She has to ration it, because all of it lies in fallen Neverland[2].
Blood magic
Passed down only by birth. Jackal has it, and so do Vivian and the Blind Witch, which is why Tink distrusts him[1][2].
Five seasons
Written before production began. Season One runs eight chapters, released on the first Tuesday of each month, with the finale due in December 2026[1][2].

A hilt that grows a blade

Wielded byThe Collector

He draws a short hilt from his belt, and a serrated, scale-ridged blade telescopes out of it segment by segment until it ends in a leaf-shaped point. He extends it in the great hall of Vaylos before facing the castle's champion, then turns it on the clay creature in Portia's cell[4]. A guard seems to name it on sight: the auto-captions read "a death spawn blade", which may be "Dawn Spawn blade". The show has not confirmed a name[4].

Worn on his back, it looks like a white disc of curved, fan-like blades. In one quick motion it snaps open into a winged crescent with feathered edges[4]. On the tower ledge at Vaylos he leaps and throws it, and it cuts across the throat of the Borafan brother holding the key to Portia's cell. Moments later the vampire's head falls, which fits the show's rule that a Mordane dies only by beheading or fire[4][2].

Off-white bandages over the whole face, leaving only red-rimmed eyes, under a wide-brimmed black hat and a dark scarf[4]. It began as a self-portrait: Kavan wrapped his own face, photographed himself in costume and iterated the photo in Nano Banana until it became the Collector. The bandaged faces echo his 2020 photo book[1][2].

Costume to character

How a Chronicles of Bone character is born

Every character starts as a real costume, which is also how he documents human authorship[1][2].

  1. 01 Build a cheap version CVS bandages, a Spirit Halloween half skull, his own jacket, a bedsheet[1][2].
  2. 02 Photograph yourself in it Self-portraits, the way he shot his photo book[1].
  3. 03 Iterate the photo Feed every result back in until it looks like an action figure[2]. Nano Banana
  4. 04 Sheet for every state Dry, wet, wounded: a new character sheet each time[1]. Magnific
  5. 05 Max out the refs Character, prop and location refs, up to 50 per shot[2]. Seedance 2.5
  6. 06 Keep the paper trail Register scripts and designs, and get rights in writing[2][1].

Then versus now

What an episode costs

AI credits versus shooting it live action

AI credits for one 28-minute episodeVideo generations only, his estimateTens of $k
Live action, per episodeHis low-end estimate, size, scope and VFX included$10M+

Drawn to scale: the AI bar is about 0.3% of the live-action one. Kavan didn't give an exact credit figure, so $30,000 stands in for tens of thousands[2].

On craft

Story first, always

At the basis of everything, it's all about story.
Kavan the KidOn whether season five will look different from season one[1]
It's important to always establish the rules of the universe that you're creating, and then live within those rules.
Kavan the KidOn keeping the lore straight[2]
Just because we have the tools and we can move so fast doesn't necessarily mean you should.
Kavan the KidOn taking time over the writing[2]
The word that I hate hearing is content. This stuff shouldn't technically be content. It's storytelling. It's art.
Kavan the KidOn why streaming is full of garbage[2]
I live more in the Chronicles of Bone world than I live in the real world at this point.
Kavan the KidOn five seasons of lore[2]
I always say that the biggest enemy is time.

07Toolkit

What Kavan makes it with

  • Video and most of the sound. Up to 50 references per shot and real micro-expressions, but it adds music to action shots that he has to strip out.[2]

  • The Chronicles of Bone is a Magnific Original, and he builds character sheets and refs inside it.[11][1]

  • Turns photos of his home-made costumes into finished characters, and upscales location grabs to 4K.[1][2]

  • Seedreamuses

Another option for character iterations from his costume photos.[2]

  • Moises AIworkaround

$29.99 a month. Splits a clip into dialogue, effects and music so he can mute the score.[2]

  • RipX DAWworkaround

Frequency-level audio repair. Flawless, but about an hour per clip.[2]

  • Sound effects to rebuild what the stem split removes, plus heavier hits layered in post.[2]

  • Sunouses

Music, with ChatGPT helping him break reference tracks down into prompts.[1]

  • A light grade on every episode.[1]

  • First frames for almost every Echo Hunter shot, and the Batman film.[1][24]

  • Klingthen

The main image-to-video model on Echo Hunter. Kling AI presented the prequel.[1][17]

  • Runway Act-Onethen

Performance capture for Echo Hunter's masked characters.[1]

  • Heavy compositing to keep Echo Hunter consistent.[1]

  • Veothen

The Warrior's Way, made entirely text to video after he got access over the holidays.[20]

Core: in every episode. Uses: regularly. Workaround: fixes a gap in another tool. Then: the 2024 and 2025 stack.

08In their own words

Kavan, on the record

I just consider myself a filmmaker.
Kavan the KidAsked on AI LIVE whether he is a filmmaker or an AI filmmaker[2]
AI didn't kill Hollywood. Hollywood killed themselves when they started using analytical writing.
Kavan the KidOn why AI is producing more original stories[1]
Don't go to film school. It's a waste of time. Just go to the school of YouTube.
Kavan the KidOn what actually taught him filmmaking[1]
What if I put all these characters into a singular world, stripped them all down to the bare basics, and then rebuilt them in my own story?
Kavan the KidOn the idea behind The Chronicles of Bone[1]
Every character should look like an action figure you'd want to buy.
Kavan the KidOn character design[2]
I didn't want to waste any of my ideas before I felt the tools were at a point that I could actually make something that had real substance.
Kavan the KidOn saving his best ideas[1]
Some months are magic. And then there's some months where it's like gravel is being dumped on you. You still got to push through.
Kavan the KidOn making an episode through a hard month[1]
My ratio in 2.0 was something like 90 to 1. Now it's down to like 30 to 1, and on a non-high day, like 20 to 1.
Kavan the KidOn generations per usable shot[2]
I literally don't schedule anything on any release day, because I spend that day writing back to everybody.

Questions about Kavan

Who is Kavan the Kid?

Kavan the Kid is Kavan Cardoza, a Los Angeles filmmaker who makes The Chronicles of Bone, an AI-made dark fantasy series and Magnific Original, almost entirely by himself. He spent about fifteen years on music videos and commercials, co-founded the AI studio Phantom X on 1 January 2025, and has 1.39 million YouTube subscribers[1][2][3].

What is Kavan the Kid's real name?

Kavan Cardoza. Press and credits use both names; Deadline called him AI filmmaker Kavan Cardoza when it broke the Echo Hunter news[27].

What is The Chronicles of Bone?

A dark fantasy saga that strips public domain characters, from King Arthur and Robin Hood to Peter Pan, Tinker Bell, Captain Hook and Captain Nemo, back to the bones and rebuilds them in one world ruled for five centuries by a vampire dynasty, the Mordane Empire. It launched on 4 November 2025 and is a Magnific Original[1][7][11].

How does Kavan the Kid make The Chronicles of Bone?

Almost alone, in 16 to 20 days per episode. He writes everything first, builds each character from a real costume he photographs himself in, iterates it in Nano Banana, makes character and location sheets, then generates shots in Seedance 2.5 with up to 50 references each. He strips unwanted music with Moises AI or RipX DAW, rebuilds effects from Artlist and his own library, and grades in DaVinci Resolve[1][2].

What AI tools does Kavan the Kid use?

Seedance 2.5 for video and most sound, Magnific, Nano Banana and Seedream for characters and references, Moises AI and RipX DAW to remove music, Artlist for effects, Suno with ChatGPT for music and DaVinci Resolve for the grade. Echo Hunter in 2025 used Midjourney, Kling, Runway Act-One and Photoshop[1][2].

How long does it take Kavan the Kid to make an episode?

16 to 20 days, working from 5am to 11pm. Episodes run 20 to 28 minutes; Chapter Five came in just under 28 after he cut two scenes to hit the deadline[2].

Who are the characters in The Chronicles of Bone?

The legends include King Arthur, Robin Hood and his squire Jackal, Tinker Bell, Captain Hook, Captain Nemo, the Last Lost Boy and the Collector. The vampire Mordanes include Vlad, King Varek, Lorsett, Desmond and Gia, with the masked Shadow Knight, the Blind Witch and, in Chapter Six, Portia Valair, the last Dawn Spawn[2][4][36].

What is the Collector's weapon?

In Chapter Six he carries two signature blades: a sword whose serrated blade telescopes out of a short hilt in about three and a half seconds, and a white disc that snaps open into a crescent boomerang in about a third of a second. He also uses a grappling crossbow and a long rifle. None of them is named on screen[4].

How did Kavan the Kid make the Collector's mask?

He bought bandages at CVS, wrapped his own face, added a black hat, a yellow raincoat and black gloves, photographed himself and iterated the photo in Nano Banana until it became the Collector[1][2].

Who owns The Chronicles of Bone?

Kavan does. Freepik, now Magnific, acquired the series as its first original made entirely with AI in February 2026, but he keeps 100% of the IP and creative control[31][30].

When does the next Chronicles of Bone episode come out?

New chapters arrive on the first Tuesday of each month on his YouTube channel. Season One runs eight chapters, and the finale is due in December 2026[1][2].

What is Phantom X?

The AI studio Kavan launched with Mike J Mitch and Sav on 1 January 2025, with no outside investment. It produces commercials and original series, five of them so far[2][25][43].

Why did Warner Bros take down Kavan the Kid's Batman film?

The Batman: A Face of Clay, an AI fan film released on 4 December 2024, used Warner Bros' character. Within days the studio had it removed and later sent a cease and desist. Kavan says the takedown was a big factor in founding Phantom X and moving to original stories[23][1].

What was Echo Hunter?

His first original film, released on 28 May 2025: a dystopian thriller about masked clone hunters, presented by Arcana Labs and billed as a SAG-AFTRA approved AI film, starring Breckin Meyer. A prequel, A Memory Too Far, followed in September 2025[16][17].

How many views does The Chronicles of Bone have?

More than 45 million across its twelve episodes on YouTube as of October 2026. Prologue Five: The King of the Seas is the most watched, with 7.75 million[3][5].
