03Biography

The Phil Langer story

From East Berlin to New York

Philipp Langer is from East Berlin, in what was East Germany, and still lives in Berlin[1][3]. He started his career in New York in the early 2000s as an art director and motion designer, at agencies including R/GA, Digitas and Wieden+Kennedy[3]. His About page lists clients across that career including American Express, Haribo, Volkswagen, Coca-Cola, Zeiss and IBM[3].

Back in Berlin, his portfolio shows a run of big-brand campaigns at Plantage Berlin: the Mezzo Mix relaunch for Coca-Cola in 2017, collectors' cans for every German player and a TV spot with Joachim Löw for the 2018 World Cup, and the Coca-Cola Euro 2020 work for the DFB partnership, shot during the pandemic[13]. He also lists the Sparkasse and Apple Pay launch, which his site calls the most successful Apple Pay launch in Germany, and campaigns at IBM iX in 2022[13].

Four hours in Midjourney

His AI moment came with Midjourney V4, which arrived in late 2022. His agency's designers could not get a pitch image right in Photoshop. He tried it in Midjourney, and within about four hours the whole presentation was done[1].

Within like four hours I kind of like finished this presentation, it was all done, and that was when I realized this is going to be huge.

Phil Langer[1]

The Hybrid Portraits

Around the same time he read that image models could make a fashion model or an animal, but not both. He set out to prove otherwise[1]. The result was The Hybrid Portraits: deer, koala, leopard, swan, pig, giraffe and lion faces fused with human ones, lit like studio fashion portraits against plain grey, with freckles carried through into fur and spots[7][9]. He built them in Midjourney and Krea and retouched them heavily in Photoshop, because, as he put it, Midjourney wants to generate one or the other[8][9].

The Instagram account @hybridportraits, in his words, blew up[1]. His About page says the series has drawn tens of millions of views, and shows screenshots of it being shared or praised by Stefan Sagmeister, Will Smith, Stella McCartney, Annie Lennox and Matthew Modine; those screenshots are his, and this page has not checked them independently[3]. The portraits are sold as prints from 99 euros, with names such as Octavia the Panther, Nina the Swan and Jackson the Lion[10]. In May 2025 Bored Panda ran fifty of them[14].

Bringing them to life

He posted his first AI videos on 12 September 2023: Oppenheimers Dream, made in Pika Labs, and Beyond Bladerunner, his first attempt with Runway Gen-2[45][21]. Hood, a Midjourney and Runway film upscaled with Topaz, passed 10,000 views that November[41]. In March 2024 The Hybrids set the portraits moving with depth maps in LeiaPix, and in June his first Luma Dream Machine test, Land of Giants, passed 100,000 views[8][9][22].

Then, on 30 July 2024, came Living Hybrids: the portraits animated with Runway's new image-to-video model, breathing and blinking[7]. It has 634,000 views, still by far his most watched video[7][2]. The popularity of the account got him into Runway's creator partner programme early, with a large credit allowance that would later pay for his biggest film[1]. That autumn he made the portraits talk, too: Hybrid Life used Runway Act-One lip sync and an ElevenLabs voice over Satie's Gymnopédie No.1[35].

From vignettes to stories

Through 2025 he pushed from visual experiments towards story. Superposition was his attempt at a cohesive plot with consistent characters[38]. No Man's Land, in July, was one continuous scene in one location, begun as a consistency test of Runway Gen-4 References[24][46]. The Quiet Man was a single-shot horror built with Kling 2.1 first-frame and last-frame[25], and Parallelum was his entry in the Dor Brothers' AI film competition[26]. His Heat 2 concept trailer passed 14,000 views, his most watched video of the year[39]. In between came lighter pieces: an unofficial Honda spec ad made in two days, The Little Scaries, made when his son asked for something a little scary, and Animal Vice, which imagines Zootopia as a gritty live-action film by Michael Mann[36][42][44].

In January 2025 HORIZONT reported that he had joined Jung von Matt's Berlin office, JvM SPREE, as Principal Creative Art & AI[4]. He works a four-day week there as, in his words, the AI expert guy in the agency, teaching the creative departments and developing AI concepts with clients, and makes his own films on Fridays, weekends and evenings[1]. In early 2026 he added The Uncanny, AI characters reflecting on being artificial, with its own Instagram account, and a LinkedIn series recasting famous films with the actors originally offered the roles, which The Generative Path picked as its Community Spotlight[27][15].

Public R&D

He treats every new model as research he can publish. The Things That Last, a father and son across a lifetime with one rechargeable AA battery that doesn't exist, made the top 25 of Runway's Big Ad Contest by his account, and AI LIVE's Andrew Davis picked it as his favourite entry on Episode 115[16][17][18]. Then came the bathrobe films, quick Seedance 2.0 tests of multi-shot generation starring himself: Mayhem, one minute of rooftop chaos from one reference image and eight prompts, Antland and The Rooms in the Back, which took about three hours[28][33][34][1]. His side-by-side tests of MiniMax H3 against Seedance were featured on AI LIVE Episode 128[19][20].

Now you can develop the script or the idea while you're editing this film.

Phil Langer[1]

Icarus Rising

Icarus Rising, released on 28 August 2026, is his most ambitious film: about ten minutes in which Daedalus escapes the labyrinth he built, with his son Icarus, on wings of his own invention[5][6]. The cast comes from years of Hybrid Portraits, matched to their roles. He tried human and green-skinned designs first, then dropped them: "this is just Avatar"[1].

Its second trailer promised a film over ten minutes long, made 100% in Seedance 2.5[31]. It was his first film without start frames. Each character has a reference sheet, with separate sheets for Icarus with wings, without wings and with his backpack; each location has two or three images; and every prompt describes where the camera is and what the characters do. About ten images carry the whole film[1][6]. He generated it in Seedance 2.5 on Runway at 720p, which used 250,000 to 300,000 credits, about $4,000 at list price, and upscaled it to 4K with Topaz for a cinema screening at Berlin's AI filmmaker meetup. At 1080p he estimates it would have cost about $10,000[1]. A sequel is in production[1].

Slophunters and The Blue Piper

After years of hate comments, mostly on LinkedIn, he answered with Slophunters: The History of "That's Not Real Art", released on 14 September 2026[11][1]. Painters mob a photographer in 1827, an orchestra corners a synth player in 1977, model makers storm a CGI studio in 1993, and in 2026 the slop hunters come through the window for an AI likeness of Phil himself. The end card reads: AI slop made by Phil Langer[11]. He is not dismissive of the critics' point: he says he would switch at once to a model that is properly sourced, with artists paid, even if it cost more[1].

The Blue Piper, in June 2026, is his most political film: a mythical blue piper lures East Germany from its sleep, about the rise of the far right ahead of local elections in the east, where he was born[29][1].

On AI LIVE

Phil was a Creator Sessions guest on 14 October 2026, one of the show's most requested, and screened eight films, including an unreleased scene from the Icarus Rising sequel[1][32]. He also explained why he thinks sound is 40% of a finished film, and why a drone layer under the whole edit, covering the joins between clips, has become his signature[1].

It's very easy to get into this and create content, but it's very hard to stand out.

The hybrids become a myth

Daedalus built the labyrinth. In Phil's version he escapes it with his son Icarus, on wings of wood and feathers lashed together, past a horned Minotaur and up into the sun[5][6].

The cast came out of years of Hybrid Portraits. Panthers and wolves suited gods, a boar suited the king, and cat-like figures suited Icarus and Daedalus for their long, thin limbs[1].

The labyrinth
Sun-bleached stone by day, night-blue when they escape. An abstract setting that hides the model's background-consistency problems[1][5].

At night, on the cliff edge above the labyrinth, father and son face each other. Icarus steps off, dives along the stone wall, opens the wings over the moonlit labyrinth and rises[5]. Two minutes later, above golden cloud, he reaches for the sun and smiles into it; the frames of his wings start to shed feathers, the cords give way, and he falls into the clouds[5]. Every shot comes from reference sheets and a prompt describing the camera and the action, with no start frame[1][6].

Stunt to beach, 0:54 to 1:00[12]
Phase 2
Four worlds side by side, 1:29 to 1:36[12]
Inputs
A performance video, two character sheets, a location image[12]

The fight, step by step

Five steps from a stunt to a fight across worlds

The chapters of his tutorial, each a frame from the video. Every timestamp opens it at that step[12].

Step 1

Create the characters

Two character sheets: full body front and back, face, hands, fabric, shoes[12].

Step 2

Change the world

One location image per world: a beach at sunset, a burning barn, an ice field under the aurora[12].

Step 3

Transfer the performance

The warehouse stunt drives the beach fight move for move[12].

Step 4

The prompt

Every reference is named in the prompt: performance video, location, character sheet 1, character sheet 2[12].

Step 5

Bring it together

The worlds cut together on one timeline, so the fight jumps between them[12].

Public R&D

A new model, a new short, starring himself

His 2026 shorts, most of them quick tests of a model that had just come out. Several star Phil himself, in a bathrobe[1].

On craft

Fights are easy. Standing out is hard.

The big epic fight scenes, they're so much easier and so much quicker than a dialogue scene with two people sitting in a room.
Phil LangerOn why action is the easy part[1]
It was also the first film I did without start frames. The entire film is just reference images.
Phil LangerOn Icarus Rising[1]
I think sound is like 40% of that finished product.
Phil LangerOn music, drones and effects[1]
These films are really just tests of multi-shot with one prompt, have several different camera angles in one motion.
Phil LangerOn the bathrobe films[1]
And then I was like, this is just Avatar. I'm recreating Avatar here.
Phil LangerOn the designs he threw away before Icarus Rising[1]
I created the entire film in Seedance 2.5 using only specific reference images and detailed prompts.

What Phil makes it with

  • Icarus Rising, its sequel, Slophunters and the four-worlds fight. Generations of up to 30 seconds, and a big jump in faces over 2.0.[1][12]

  • Runwaycore

Where he generates Seedance. An early creator partner, thanks to The Hybrid Portraits; Gen-3 brought Living Hybrids to life.[1][7]

  • Upscales his 720p generations to 4K for the cinema screen.[1]

  • Where The Hybrid Portraits began, on V4. Still his first stop for weird, random looks, because newer image models are so precise.[1][9]

  • The bathrobe films. Multi-shot, several camera angles from one prompt, changed AI filmmaking for him.[1]

  • Klinguses

Kling 3.0 for Darkness Wakes Below the Deep and The Uncanny; Kling 2.1 first-frame and last-frame for The Quiet Man.[30][27][25]

  • Images for Darkness Wakes Below the Deep, The Uncanny and The Things That Last, and part of the Icarus Rising toolset.[30][27][16][6]

  • Seedreamuses

Part of the image toolset for Icarus Rising.[6]

  • Claudeuses

Fills in fight choreography from his plain-language beats.[1]

  • Dreaminasometimes

A little of Icarus Rising was generated there.[1]

  • Royalty-free music and drones for the atmospheric bed under his films.[1]

  • Pixabayuses

The free library he uses alongside Artlist.[1]

  • Sunosometimes

Only when nothing else fits, as with The Blue Piper's eerie score.[1]

  • Heavy retouching on every Hybrid Portrait, because Midjourney wanted to generate one thing or the other.[8][9]

  • Kreathen

With Midjourney, for the 2024 Hybrid Portraits and Carcosa.[9][40]

  • Land of Giants, his second most watched video, and the morphs in Hybrid Fusion.[22][43]

  • Close-ups in Hybrid Life and shots in The Sound of Silence; he later tested its open-weights H3 against Seedance.[35][23][19]

  • The voice of Hybrid Life.[35]

Core: on every recent film. Uses: regularly. Sometimes: when nothing else fits. Then: the 2023 to 2025 stack.

08In their own words

Phil, on the record

Within like four hours I kind of like finished this presentation, it was all done, and that was when I realized this is going to be huge.
Phil LangerOn his Midjourney V4 moment[1]
It's very easy to get into this and create content, but it's very hard to stand out.
Phil LangerOn building your own visual language[1]
Now you can develop the script or the idea while you're editing this film.
Phil LangerOn how AI changes the order of filmmaking[1]
My objective was to craft portraits of artificial beings possessing strikingly lifelike qualities so that the observer feels an emotional connection to them just like they would with real individuals.
Phil LangerOn The Hybrids, quoted by Stefan Sagmeister on Instagram (screenshot on his About page)[3]
I'm still blown away by, you have this idea and Seedance pops it out and it works.
Phil LangerOn the flight over the sea in Icarus Rising[1]
I did it so often that sometimes I'm like, forget it. I just leave it in.
Phil LangerOn models giving his animal characters human ears[1]
If you wait a week, then you're missing all these models.
Phil LangerOn keeping up while working in advertising[1]
It's always simple solution for very complex problems.
Phil LangerOn the far right, after The Blue Piper[1]
If there would be a model that is sourced properly and artists getting paid, and even can be a little bit more expensive, I would instantly jump on this.
Phil LangerOn training data, after Slophunters[1]
I think sound is like 40% of that finished product.
Phil LangerOn music and sound effects[1]

Questions about Phil

Who is Phil Langer?

Phil Langer (Philipp Langer) is a Berlin creative director and AI filmmaker who posts as theBytePit. He created The Hybrid Portraits, photorealistic human and animal portraits, and films including Living Hybrids, Icarus Rising and Slophunters. By day he is Principal Creative Art & AI at the agency Jung von Matt SPREE[1][3][4].

Is Phil Langer theBytePit?

Yes. theBytePit (written "the bytepit" on YouTube) is Phil Langer's handle on YouTube and Instagram, where he posts his AI films, model tests and tutorials. His channel has about 6,200 subscribers and 41 videos[2].

What are The Hybrid Portraits?

Photorealistic blends of human and animal faces, such as deer, leopard, swan, pig and giraffe, lit like studio portraits. Phil began them in Midjourney V4 after reading that image models could make a fashion model or an animal but not both, retouched them heavily in Photoshop, and posts them on Instagram as @hybridportraits. They are sold as prints at thehybridportraits.com[1][9][10].

How was Living Hybrids made?

Phil made the portraits in Midjourney, retouched them in Photoshop and animated them with Runway's image-to-video model, then new. Released on 30 July 2024, it has about 634,000 views, by far his most watched video[7].

What is Icarus Rising?

A ten-minute AI short film by Phil Langer, released on 28 August 2026. Daedalus escapes the labyrinth he built with his son Icarus, on wings of his own invention, with a cast drawn from The Hybrid Portraits. It has about 63,800 YouTube views and screened in a cinema at Berlin's AI filmmaker meetup[5][1].

How was Icarus Rising made?

Entirely in Seedance 2.5 on Runway, with no start frames. Phil made a reference sheet for each character and state, including Icarus with wings, without wings and with his backpack, plus two or three images per location: about ten images in all. Each prompt describes the camera and the action. He generated at 720p and upscaled to 4K with Topaz[1][6].

How much did Icarus Rising cost to make?

About 250,000 to 300,000 Runway credits, roughly $4,000 at list price, by Phil's estimate. The credits came from Runway's creator partner programme. He says generating at 1080p instead of 720p would have cost about $10,000[1].

Is there a sequel to Icarus Rising?

Yes, it is in production. Phil showed an unreleased two-minute scene on AI LIVE Creator Sessions #11 in October 2026, in which Daedalus goes after the king who set up the labyrinth. No title or release date has been announced[1].

What is Slophunters about?

Slophunters: The History of "That's Not Real Art" (14 September 2026) is a three-minute satire of the critics who attack every new medium: painters against photography in 1827, talking pictures, computer art, electronic music, CGI, and in 2026 an AI likeness of Phil himself. He made it after years of hate comments, mostly on LinkedIn[11][1].

How did Phil Langer make the AI fight scene in four worlds?

He took a real stunt performance filmed in a warehouse and used Seedance 2.5's Omni Reference to replace both performers with his own characters from character sheets, then moved the same choreography to a beach, a burning barn and an ice field, and cut them together. He shows each step in his tutorial How I Created This AI Fight Scene with Seedance 2.5[12].

What AI tools does Phil Langer use?

Seedance 2.5 on Runway for video, Topaz to upscale to 4K, Midjourney for character and location looks, Nano Banana and Seedream for images, Kling 3.0, Claude for fight choreography, and Artlist, Pixabay and occasionally Suno for sound. His earlier films used Runway Gen-2 and Gen-3, Luma Dream Machine, MiniMax, Krea and ElevenLabs[1][6][9].

Does Phil Langer make AI films full time?

No. He works a four-day week as a creative director at Jung von Matt SPREE, where he is the agency's AI expert, and makes his own films on Fridays, weekends and evenings[1][4].

Where is Phil Langer from?

East Berlin, in the former East Germany, and he is based in Berlin. A 2025 Bored Panda feature called him Austrian, which does not match his own account[1][3][14].

What did Phil Langer do before AI?

He started in New York in the early 2000s as an art director and motion designer at agencies including R/GA, Digitas and Wieden+Kennedy, then worked on campaigns in Berlin for Coca-Cola, Mezzo Mix, Sparkasse and IBM[3][13].

Has Phil Langer been on AI LIVE?

Yes. He was the guest on Creator Sessions #11 on 14 October 2026, screening eight films, and his work featured on the weekly show in Episode 115 (The Things That Last) and Episode 128 (his MiniMax H3 versus Seedance tests)[1][18][19].
