03Biography

The Henry Daubrez story

A kid from Vottem, raised on Don Bluth

Henry Daubrez grew up in Vottem, near Liège in Belgium, on Don Bluth, early 90s anime and Studio Ghibli, and on kids-on-bikes films like Explorers and The Goonies[6][11][1]. The moment that pointed him at visual effects was a Lord of the Rings bonus DVD about Weta Digital[6][19]. He studied computer graphics and 3D, taught himself digital painting, and did a CGI internship at a video game studio in France before moving into web design, in the days of HTML4 and Flash, back in Belgium[5]. Muse by Clios tells a slightly different start, with a computer science course at a local college that he didn't enjoy; neither account names a school[6].

Thirteen years at Dogstudio

He spent thirteen years at Dogstudio, the digital studio founded in Namur that later opened in Chicago, rising from head of design to CEO and becoming a partner[5][9]. Its clients included Microsoft, The New York Times, Tomorrowland, Hulu, Adobe, Supercell, Expo 2020 Dubai and Zoox[5][9][8]. In 2018 SXSW listed him as a mentor from Dogstudio[32]. When Dogstudio joined the global agency DEPT in May 2022, he stayed on to lead it as partner and CEO/CCO, and by May 2025 he was also DEPT's global VP of creative innovation and design[9][10][6].

When I entered the digital industry 20 years ago, I secretly hoped one day to find my way into film.

Henry Daubrez[4]

Falling into the noise

He found generative AI around 2021, through VQGAN in the Wombo app, then Disco Diffusion and Stability's tools[5][4]. In 2022 he started a story called The Light Within with Midjourney v4, then shelved it[5]. By October 2023 he was on stage at the KIKK Festival in Namur with a talk called Coming of A(I)ge, about two years of adventures with generative AI[8]. Around the same time he moved from Belgium to Salt Lake City, Utah[6][1].

At Dogstudio/DEPT he has described leading an AI-assisted film for Coca-Cola, built with ComfyUI and custom LoRAs on a brief to use as many AI technologies as possible[5][6]. The AI LIVE team worked with him on Coca-Cola projects in those early days[33][1]. The film's title and year could not be confirmed for this page.

Kitsune, made over the holidays

In December 2024 he got early access to Google's Veo 2[5]. A month later, on 16 January 2025, he released Kitsune, a five-minute love story between two lonely souls, a red fox and a spirit fox, made over the holidays with every shot generated by Veo 2 text-to-video[11]. It took about 5,000 to 7,000 generations to arrive at 1,700 curated sequences, and his stated aim was warmth and nostalgia, not the cold, clinical feel of so many AI films[11].

BANISHED followed in February, again 100% Veo 2 for the shots, with ElevenLabs voices and Udio music, a tale somewhere between Monte Cristo and The Pied Piper that took a few hundred hours[12]. In March 2025 he introduced the KIDD-0 cinematic universe, the masked kid who still runs through his work[13].

Electric Pink and Google

Then Google asked him to make a film for Google I/O 2025, with carte blanche[14]. Electric Pink is a coming-of-age self-portrait about his own creative wiring, from the fuzzy nostalgia of childhood to the full HD chaos of the present[14]. He built it from Imagen 3 still frames, which he retouched heavily, then animated each scene with Veo 2, using first-frame to last-frame interpolation as those separate tools were converging into Flow[14]. In June 2025 it screened at Tribeca in Behind the Lens: AI Filmmaking with Flow from Google, alongside work by Dave Clark and Junie Lau[15].

On 3 September 2025 Google Labs named him its first filmmaker in residence, working directly with the Flow team, mentoring artists in its Flow Sessions pilot and starting an interactive Flow project, The Enchanted Door, in which viewers choose what happens after a character finds a mysterious archway[3][4]. KIKK Festival's October 2026 programme describes it as a year he spent as Resident Filmmaker[7]. In November 2025 he returned to The Light Within and made a two-minute concept trailer in six days, with early access to Nano Banana Pro and Veo 3.1 in Flow; it is now listed as an animated feature in development[16][7].

Overgrown

His most personal film came out on 21 July 2026. Overgrown, a 13-minute short that he calls a hand-painted meditation on chronic resilience, follows a young woman whose body is overtaken by a silent floral plague and a stranger who teaches her to turn it into a rhythm of resilience[18][17]. In his director statement he calls it a visual distillation of a lifetime lived alongside cancer and chronic illness, and says he is a survivor himself, currently in remission[18]. For years he had also made portraits with cancer patients[18][19]. The teaser had gone out in February, in consideration for the 2026 Tribeca Festival[17].

We don't move on from our history; we learn to wear it.

Henry Daubrez[18]

Junkyard King

Junkyard King began as a test of Seedance 2[1]. Henry never does research for its own sake; he always keeps a real story running behind his experiments[1]. Chapter 0: The Pink Edge, released on 17 March 2026, introduced Artie, a geeky teenager obsessed with VHS tapes, samurai movies and late-night mysteries, who plays detective after several teens go missing and finds a katana hidden in an abandoned junkyard[20]. On AI LIVE episode 118 it drew 14 straight 1s from the live chat[34], and in May Wonder Studios picked it for Wonder TV's first five hand-picked filmmakers[26].

The raw material is public domain, the legend of King Arthur and its sword, but he writes every episode himself and borrows only the codes people already recognise[1]. The setting is the childhood he grew up in, somewhere between the 80s and the 90s; the early descriptions say 1980s and the later ones early 90s, and details like Artie's yellow Walkman come straight from his own memories[1][20][22]. Chapter 1: Training, in June, was made with invideo Agent One, which he said shifted his focus from prompt engineering to direction, camera, pacing and dialogue[21].

I don't like just doing R&D to do R&D. I like to have a project behind, so that I can build up something.

Henry Daubrez[1]

A world premiere on AI LIVE

Chapter 2: The New Guy had its world premiere on AI LIVE Creator Sessions #5 on 26 August 2026[1][22]. It runs 15 minutes, took about six weeks, or seven to eight weeks of work counting his first ever collaborator, Julie Wieland, and costs him around $1,000 a finished minute[1]. invideo partners on the season, which is planned at nine episodes counting episode zero, with three seasons outlined[1]. Straight after the premiere, host Chris Branch called it probably the best animation he had ever seen made with AI[1].

On the same show Henry shared his screen and opened up the whole production: the script marked up scene by scene, an asset bible with a sheet for every state of every character, the invideo agent made to show its prompt and references before it generates, and the ElevenLabs trick that voice-changes seven minutes of dialogue in one pass[1]. Chapter 3: The Other Side followed on 7 October, sixteen minutes that take Artie, Kai and Socket through the gate into Avalon to find Emily; its end card credits invideo Agent Two, and The FWA lists it[23][30].

ODD KID, and the worlds around it

On 26 June 2026 he launched ODD KID, a studio for original films, series and worlds, with a 45-second showreel and a tagline: Original worlds. Impossible films. New tools, old taste[24][36][7]. It produces Junkyard King[22]. Between main episodes he posts Fragments, 30 to 45-second stories with a start and an end that build lore for KIDD-O, White Rabbit and Dead Normal[1][27][41]. In September he launched PINK STATIC, a fictional band for Artie and Kai, and posted a vertical Junkyard King music video; later that month The Cycle tried a new style altogether[28][38][39]. In October he vibe-coded Junkyard King Arena, a free browser brawler set in the show's world[29][40].

He has also been named a judge of the Formula E x Google Cloud Creators Challenge[38], spoken at Sundance Collab with a talk called No, Generative AI Doesn't Kill Creativity[31], and returned to KIKK in October 2026 with Hot or Slop?[7]. His view is that studios and streamers now want people who can tell a story, not people with the biggest followings, and that they expect a clean chain of title that traces every asset back to a person; he is developing a feature film on that basis[1].

06The worlds he builds

Inside Junkyard King, and every world around it

A teenage detective, a pink katana and a mechanical crow, made shot by shot with an AI agent[1][20]. Then the films that got him there: Electric Pink's masked kid, Kitsune's two foxes, and the ODD KID worlds still taking shape.

The story so far

Everything you need before Chapter 3. Scroll, and each line lights up.

  1. 01The kid

Artie is a geeky teenager obsessed with VHS tapes, samurai movies and late-night mysteries: awkward by day, a detective by night[20].

  2. 02The missing

When several teens vanish, he investigates alone, tracing red yarn across town maps, and finds a katana hidden in an abandoned junkyard[20][34].

  3. 03The blade

The sword is real, it chose him, and it glows hot pink when it resonates. Its name is X-Cal[21][35][22].

  4. 04The Sovereign

A girl called the Sovereign commands an army of iron creatures, and three kids from his school are trapped in another world[35].

  5. 05The crow

Socket, a sarcastic mechanical crow who hates being called chicken, becomes his trainer[35][1].

  6. 06The doors

A door between worlds opens only when the blade resonates with that world's own note. Brute force fails. Go like water, not fire[1].

  7. 07Avalon

Through the gate lies Avalon, strangely beautiful and not at all safe, where Artie, Kai and Socket go looking for Emily[23].

Blade down. Rings out. A car swallowed whole.

Opened byArtie, with X-Cal

Socket's rule is that a door only opens when the blade resonates with a world's own note, and Artie has been brute-forcing it[1]. Here the blade goes into the ground, a pink pulse shoots into the sky, shockwave rings spread across the yard and a dome-shaped portal swallows a wrecked car, while Kai listens on his walkie-talkie from behind a container[22][1].

The escape between its legs could not be made in one generation: Henry built those 10 to 15 seconds from pieces over a couple of days[1].

ODD KID

Original worlds. Impossible films. New tools, old taste.

ODD KID is the studio Henry launched in June 2026 for original films, series and worlds, and the producer of Junkyard King[24][7][22]. Its 45-second showreel strings his worlds together: KIDD-O's masked kid in a red cape, a girl in round glasses, Junkyard King's pink lightning[24].

Between main episodes he posts Fragments: 30 to 45-second stories, each with a start and an end, that build lore without moving the main plot[1][27]. He calls it repetition done properly: more ways to recognise the world, the characters and the tone[28].

Junkyard King
His AI-animated fantasy series: an 80s and 90s kids-on-bikes adventure built on the codes of the Arthurian legend[1][20].
KIDD-O
Childhood, imagination and the monsters that appear when the world forgets how to dream. Giants called the Strangers roam the horizon[27].
The Light Within
Begun in 2022, shelved, revived as a concept trailer in 2025 and now an animated feature in development[5][16][7].
White Rabbit
Underland: a gritty, steampunk reimagining of Alice in Wonderland[25].
Dead Normal
A normal teenager comes back from the dead as a ghoul, and still has to go to school[2].
Overgrown
His most personal film: a young woman overtaken by a floral plague learns a rhythm of resilience[18].
PINK STATIC
The best band that never existed: Artie and Kai's band, a music spin-off of Junkyard King[28].
Junkyard King Arena
A free browser brawler he vibe-coded: fight the Hollows and the Hollow King across the junkyard, the forest and the gate[29][40].

Between the episodes

Fragments, concepts and the worlds still forming

Short in-between stories that make each universe feel alive, plus the concept films that started them[27][2].

On craft

Story first, tools second

Whatever is under the hood shouldn't be the center of the conversation. The story should be.
Henry DaubrezWriting about BANISHED, February 2025[12]
What annoys me, what triggers me these days, is there's less effort being put towards storytelling.
Henry DaubrezOn where AI creators go wrong[1]
I'm fine tuning the prompts manually, but I'm not writing the first draft myself. It's ridiculous. Don't do that.
Henry DaubrezOn working with the invideo agent[1]
I could build much faster by just doing those 20 second sequences.
Henry DaubrezOn choosing long-form over the social media game[1]
If you build something which is worth watching, which shows that you understand how a film is being put together, even a short film, eventually I think there's a lot more chance that people will find you.
Henry DaubrezHis advice to new filmmakers[1]
I believe in repetition when building an IP. Not reposting the same thing, but giving people more ways to recognize the world, the characters and the tone.
Henry DaubrezLaunching PINK STATIC, September 2026[28]

What Henry makes it with

  • Holds the script, the bible and every episode so far. He works shot by shot and makes it show its prompt and references before it generates. Chapter 3 is credited to it.[1][23]

  • Junkyard King began as a Seedance 2 test, and Chapter 2 stayed on 2.0 to keep the look consistent.[1]

  • A voice clone per character, trained on a clean 15-second generation, and the voice changer run over whole chunks of the edit.[1]

  • First drafts of every character, then /describe with his style references to pull designs back from the average.[1]

  • Where he fixes character designs, though he says it tends towards an average.[1]

  • Character sheets for every state, object sheets and environment clean-up.[1]

  • The edit, layering voices, effects, ambience and music.[1]

  • Sunouses

The soundtrack, generated to length, with variations on one theme on different instruments.[1]

  • Quick iterations, after a year as Google's resident filmmaker; The Light Within was made inside it.[1][16]

  • Used to upscale KIDD-O, which held its style with little warping.[33][5]

  • Google AI Studiobuilt

Where he vibe-coded his own frame extractor, pulling 1080p frames at set intervals.[1]

  • Adobe Podcastworkaround

A partial fix for unwanted music in Seedance 2.5 output.[1]

  • Tried on release, but it changed the polish of the image too much for Chapter 2.[1]

  • Made Chapter 1, and Chapter 2 started in it.[21][1]

  • Veo 2then

Every shot of Kitsune and BANISHED, and the motion in Electric Pink.[11][12][14]

  • Imagen 3then

The still frames behind Electric Pink, retouched by hand to lock the art direction.[14]

  • Early access for The Light Within concept trailer, made in six days.[16]

  • The animation in The Light Within, inside Flow.[16]

  • Udiothen

    The music in BANISHED.[12]

Core: used on Junkyard King now. Uses: regularly. Built: made it himself. Workaround: fixes a gap in another tool. Tried: tested, not adopted yet. Then: his 2025 films.

08In their own words

Henry, on the record

It's still work, even if I'm having fun. It's still work. It's just not their work.
Henry DaubrezOn whether AI filmmaking counts as work[1]
I like to think that my value is on what I want to say and how I want to say it.
Henry DaubrezOn sharing his whole workflow on AI LIVE[1]
The script is the Bible, but the film breathes as it forms.
Henry DaubrezOn agile filmmaking[5]
I try to use each model for what it does well, not for what I want it to do well.
Henry DaubrezOn choosing tools[5]
Early models didn't give you what you wanted. They gave you something adjacent.
Henry DaubrezOn how far the tools have come[5]
My best guess so far is around $1,000 a minute finished.
Henry DaubrezOn what a Junkyard King episode costs[1]
Someone has to be able to prove at the very beginning that you or an individual created the asset you're using.
Henry DaubrezOn chain of title for studios and streamers[1]
Joining something bigger than us needs to make sense from both a human and professional point of view.

12Questions

Questions about Henry

Who is Henry Daubrez?

Henry Daubrez is a Belgian filmmaker and creative director, based in Salt Lake City, Utah, who creates the AI-animated series Junkyard King through his studio ODD KID. He spent thirteen years at the digital studio Dogstudio, rising to CEO, made the AI films Kitsune and Electric Pink in 2025, and was Google Labs' first filmmaker in residence on Flow[1][5][3][7].

What is Junkyard King?

Junkyard King is an original AI-animated fantasy series created by Henry Daubrez and produced by ODD KID. It follows Artie, a geeky teenager who finds a glowing pink katana in an abandoned junkyard while investigating missing kids, his best friend Kai, and Socket, a sarcastic mechanical crow. It borrows the codes of the King Arthur legend, but Henry writes every episode himself[22][1].

Where can I watch Junkyard King?

Every chapter is free on Henry Daubrez's YouTube channel, youtube.com/@henrydaubrez: Chapter 0: The Pink Edge, Chapter 1: Training, Chapter 2: The New Guy and Chapter 3: The Other Side. Chapter 2 had its world premiere on AI LIVE Creator Sessions #5 on 26 August 2026[2][1].

How is Junkyard King made?

Henry writes a script, builds an asset bible of character sheets for every state and environments for every light, and uploads both to invideo's agent, which drafts prompts and generates shots with Seedance 2.0. He asks for five to eight-second shots, feeds screenshots back in for continuity, voices the characters with ElevenLabs, scores with Suno and edits in Premiere Pro. He counts about 14 tools in all[1].

How much does an episode of Junkyard King cost and how long does it take?

His best guess is around $1,000 per finished minute. Chapter 2, which runs 15 minutes, took about six weeks, or seven to eight weeks of work counting his collaborator Julie Wieland[1].

Is Henry Daubrez still filmmaker in residence at Google?

Google Labs announced him as its first filmmaker in residence on 3 September 2025, working with the Flow team and mentoring its Flow Sessions pilot. KIKK Festival's October 2026 programme describes it as a year he spent in the role, so it is described here in the past tense[3][7].

What is ODD KID?

ODD KID is the studio Henry Daubrez launched in June 2026 for original films, series and worlds. It produces Junkyard King and develops KIDD-O, White Rabbit, Dead Normal and The Light Within. Its tagline is Original worlds. Impossible films. New tools, old taste[24][7][22].

How was Kitsune made?

Every shot in Kitsune was generated with Google's Veo 2 text-to-video. Henry made the five-minute film in about a month over the 2024 holidays and kept 1,700 curated sequences from about 5,000 to 7,000 generations. It was released on 16 January 2025[11].

What AI tools were used to make Electric Pink?

Henry built Electric Pink from Imagen 3 still frames, which he retouched heavily to lock the art direction, then animated each scene with Veo 2, using first-frame to last-frame interpolation. He made it for Google I/O 2025 as those tools were converging into Flow[14].

What is Overgrown about?

Overgrown is Henry Daubrez's 13-minute short from July 2026 about a young woman whose body is overtaken by a silent floral plague, and a stranger who teaches her to turn it into a rhythm of resilience. In his director statement he describes it as a distillation of a lifetime lived alongside cancer and chronic illness, and says he is a survivor himself, currently in remission[18].

What did Henry Daubrez do before AI filmmaking?

He studied computer graphics, moved into web design, and spent thirteen years at the Belgian digital studio Dogstudio, from head of design to CEO and partner. After Dogstudio joined DEPT in 2022 he led it as CEO/CCO, and by 2025 was also DEPT's global VP of creative innovation and design[5][9][6].

Where is Henry Daubrez from?

He is Belgian and grew up in Vottem, near Liège. He later moved to Salt Lake City, Utah[6][1].

Who are the characters in Junkyard King?

Artie, the teenage detective with the pink katana; Kai, his red-haired best friend who joins in Chapter 2; and Socket, the mechanical crow who trains Artie. The lore includes the Sovereign, who commands an army of iron creatures, three missing kids, and Emily, whom they go looking for in Avalon[22][35][23].

How does Henry Daubrez keep AI characters consistent?

With an asset bible: a master sheet for each character, a separate sheet for every state they appear in, sheets for objects and environments in every lighting condition. Before anything generates he has the invideo agent list the references it will use, and he feeds in a screenshot of the current shot when he changes angle[1].
